This lecture introduces the audience to Chinese history, with a concentration on the 19th and first half of the 20th century, using the development of China’s modern educational system as a springboard. It will briefly introduce how Confucianism became the orthodox ideology in imperial China and discuss the development of the school system, the civic examination system, and influential Confucian intellectuals in imperial China. The lecture will focus on how modern education, which was initially introduced to China by missionaries, increasingly supplanted traditional education in China beginning in the late Qing dynasty. It will discuss how the wars with Western countries and Japan at the turning of the 20th century prompted some Chinese officials and educators to advocate for educational reform, the resistance it encountered, why China adopted the Japanese school system at first but then switched to the American school system in 1922, how education became a matter of national survival and how those reforms reflected Chinese scholars’ images of modernization. At the same time, the lecture will also uncover the role of missionaries in the transformation of Chinese modern education.
